Reviving Reading Proficiency
Recent assessments have revealed a troubling decline in reading proficiency among 13-year-olds, reaching the lowest levels in 40 years. This decline is attributed to an overemphasis on phonics following the pandemic while neglecting essential reading skills like fluency, vocabulary, and motivation. Experts, including myself, advocate for integrating reading fluency and accurate and expressive reading and phonics in reading education. Incorporating vocabulary building into activities that enhance oral communication can significantly improve students' reading and comprehension abilities. For example, I demonstrate engagement in reading, writing, and critical thinking exercises to deepen students' understanding of the text, connect it to their experiences, and relate it to their world. Teachers, tutors, and parents who utilize "kid-friendly," reliable, and valid multimedia documents, videos, and objects to introduce historical events and life in the past, such as "The Gold Rush," before reading a decodable passage on this topic, effectively improve language and reading comprehension skills. Strategies prioritizing fluency, such as repeated reading and active, stop, jot, and think reading, are highly recommended to enhance reading outcomes and should be fundamental components of comprehensive reading instruction.
